The Corolla has cemented a reputation for reliability and value and the 2022 Toyota Corolla is an affordable and attractive compact car that’s loaded with standard active safety features and it is now in its third year of a new generation. The 2022 Toyota Corolla SE Nightshade Edition is based on the regular SE with the exception of some subtle styling changes that include various gloss black accents, most notably with the black wheels, front grille surround, mirrors, door handles, rocker panels, trunk spoiler, and badges on the car.
This Toyota Corolla Nightshade Edition uses a 169-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder that sends power to the front wheels through a CVT automatic, fuel economy measures 32/41 mpg city/highway. The Toyota is smooth around town and steady on the highway, however hard acceleration produces a high pitched engine sound that is not ideal. Two things we do like are the larger 18-inch wheels and the sport-tuned suspension that makes it more fun to drive than the regular setup and isolates all but the worst bumps.
Inside, the hatchback has a streamlined dashboard and soft-touch materials, every model has passive entry and push-button start. The Corolla SE sedan still comes standard with plenty of features that includes a leather-trimmed steering wheel, front sport seats, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Toyota Corolla hatchback has 18 cubic feet of cargo space behind its back seat, but we only fit two carry-on bags back there. However, the new no-cost Enhanced Cargo Space option expands that area by 6 cubic feet (23 total) by replacing the spare tire with a tire-repair kit. There is also a convenient tray at the front of their center console and a useful bin below the armrest.
The Toyota Corolla received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. These ratings include five stars in the front and side crash tests, and four stars in the rollover test. It also earned a 2021 Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS, boasting Good ratings in all crash tests. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams.
