Red Bull GRC Daytona

The Red Bull GRC marched on with two rounds of action at the iconic Daytona International Speedway in the second doubleheader event of the year. Supercar points leader Tanner Foust and 2015 series runner-up Sebastian Eriksson entered the event as defending race winners. The 2016 Red Bull GRC Daytona course was the series’ fastest yet, with a .742-mile layout that featured 12 turns and a flowing dirt section.

However it was Steve Arpin and Foust who split this weekend’s Red Bull Global Rallycross Supercar finals at Daytona International Speedway. On Saturday, Arpin gave himself and Chip Ganassi Racing their first victories in Red Bull GRC at a track where the Ganassi team has already won the Daytona 500 and 24 Hours of Daytona, while Foust took his third victory of the season on Sunday to extend his points lead.

Persistent lightning delayed the proceedings until the early evening, with Arpin winning the first semifinal in dry conditions and Foust winning the second in wet conditions roughly four hours later to earn lane choice for the main event alongside Arpin and Joni Wiman. The showers through the afternoon made for a slippery track, with drivers struggling to find grip on the course.

It was a chaotic final which saw Scott Speed take the lead initially, before Foust used the Joker Lap to re-claim 1st place early on. After Foust spun collecting second-place Patrik Sandell, Speed reclaimed the lead, but after driving with the car on fire for a lap and a half, he finally had to pull off after taking the white flag. As a result Arpin then inherited the lead with teammate Brian Deegan following and Eriksson completing the podium.

“You have to be super aggressive on this first corner to give yourself some track position to be in a position to race,” Arpin said. “One of the things that I’ve learned here are there are some areas of the track where you just have to attack it like a dirt track, to almost where you are being overaggressive. Then, there are other areas where you have to be super disciplined, just back everything up and stay calm through there. It’s just finding that happy medium in those areas around different parts of the racetrack.”

In Race 2 Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross’ Foust recovered from a disappointing Race 1 result to win at Daytona. Foust extended his championship lead with the victory as he led teammate Speed and 2015 defending race winner Eriksson to the finish line.

But Foust owed his crew big time as both Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross and Sandell’s Bryan Herta Rallysport team spent the entire night repairing their vehicles after extensive damage from the previous night’s main event. Speed, meanwhile, switched to a third Beetle after damage from the fire proved too extensive to repair overnight. Speed qualified fastest, but was bumped to fourth in seeding under to Red Bull GRC rules due to changing his car during the weekend.

The final required a restart after heavy contact between Speed and Austin Dyne displaced a tire barrier in turn six. On the restart, beating and banging between Foust and Eriksson wasn’t enough to displace Foust from the lead, while Speed shot ahead to fourth from his third row starting spot. As Foust extended a lead over Eriksson and Wiman, Speed took a late-race Joker Lap to grab second and give Volkswagen a 1-2 finish.

“I really, really love bringing home a win for the guys this weekend,” Foust said. “They have been working through the heat, and we were here until 6 in the morning. We had two impacts in the previous round—one hit the hole in the track, which hit the right front suspension. That kind of made the car dead in the water and gave (Patrik) Sandell, nowhere to go, and that was the second impact. The crew had to fix both sides of the car.”

Steve Arpin, #00 Chip Ganassi Racing Ford Fiesta ST: “This weekend is honestly so incredible. There was a piece of history that was made in motorsports today with the Ford GT coming back to win at Le Mans 50 years later, and just to be a tiny small piece of that is literally the most remarkable feeling in the world. But racing for such an iconic team owner, coming to the most iconic motorsports track in the world and being able to add to his trophy collection right here just makes this an unbelievable weekend.”

Tanner Foust, #34 Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Beetle: “I really, really love bringing home a win for the guys this weekend. They have been working through the heat, and we were here until 6 in the morning. We had two impacts in the previous round—one hit the hole in the track, which hit the right front suspension. That kind of made the car dead in the water and gave (Patrik) Sandell, nowhere to go, and that was the second impact. The crew had to fix both sides of the car.”

Scott Speed, #41 Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Beetle: “We were fastest in warmup, qualified on pole, and had more mechanical failures in the heat races. We ended up having to start the final basically last, and to drive up through to second is just a testament to how good our cars are, and how much our Volkswagen Andretti crew worked. I’m glad for the guys that they got a little bit of a payoff, because they worked all night to get this car ready—literally all night—they went home for a shower and then came right back to work this morning, so it’s really cool and I’m really happy for the guys to get to the podium.”
