All Toyotafest celebrates its 21st anniversary this year. Going back to its roots, the intent of All Toyotafest was to be an annual gathering of Toyota enthusiasts where they can enjoy and appreciate all makes and models of Toyota vehicles. However Toyotafest is a little different and it was never intended to be a form of competition with “winners” and “losers”. Toyotafest, held each year on a small patch of grass next door to the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
As a result, at each event awards are not presented, that means, no more 1st, 2nd and/or 3rd place awards in specific categories. Rather, TORC (Toyota Owner’s and Restorer’s Club) Directors acknowledge the owner’s efforts within their selected category of participation and recognize individuals for outstanding and/or unique work. The TORC Board will select and present recognition Badge of Recognition to participants that bring outstanding vehicles to the show.
The idea behind All Toyotafest was intended to be an event where all Toyota enthusiasts can bring their vehicles, visit with other enthusiasts, build camaraderie, partake in a sense of community, and to enjoy the day with friends and family. TORC are very focused on helping to promote community and provide a safe and fun event for people to enjoy a common love of Toyota vehicles.
While there were many exceptional Toyotas at this year’s event, and even more when you scourer the carpark, the show first started two decades ago with just 10 or 20 people at Moonlight State Beach in Carlsbad. Mike Bingham said. It lasted two years there. Then “…I had some friends at the Queen Mary,” Bingham said, and the show had a new home. Those first Queen Mary gatherings were held in the ship’s parking lot on asphalt. There were usually 30 or 40 Toyotas for the first six years. Then, “…I saw a Rolls-Royce club show at (Harry Bridges Memorial) Park.” So they moved it and from there it “…just kind of grew and grew,” said Bingham.
