High-speed drifting took center stage at Sonoma Raceway for the annual Winter Jam, hosted by Sonoma Drift. This year’s event was bigger than ever with the action taking place at six different locations around the facility, including two courses in the main paddock and courses at Turns 7, 2-4, 8 and 11 of the 12-turn road course. More than 150 drivers registered for the event, which concludes the 2015 Sonoma Drift season.
Highlights of the weekend included the Team Tandem competition as well as the crowning of the 2015 Winter Jam Champion. Drifting differs from traditional racing as the drivers work to control their high-horsepower car while it slides sideways at high speed. Drivers are judged on execution and style rather than who finishes the course fastest.
The event included several professional drifters, including locals Matt Field, Ryan Kado and Jeff Wolfson. “I was excited to come out to Winter Jam because the grassroots drifting scene is strong in Northern California,” said Aurimas “ODI” Bakchis, a professional Formula Drift driver. “It was great to meet the drivers and bang doors with them throughout the event.”
