There has never been a sports car like the XL Sport concept, this is a car that uncompromisingly furthers the development of the lightweight sports car. Based on the fuel efficient XL1, the XL Sport is a sports car, a compelling blend of efficiency and emotion.
The XL Sport houses the 197-hp 99 lb-ft, 90-degree V-twin found in the Ducati 1199 Superleggera sportbike. The engine can rev all the way to 11,000 rpm and is mated to a 7-speed DSG. The XL Sport accelerates from 0–62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.7 seconds, and the XL Sport will keep on running until it reaches its top speed of 168 mph.
Like the XL1, the XL Sport features a CFRP monocoque and high-strength steel subframes. It tips the scales at just under 2000 lbs. The front suspension features pullrod actuation for the dampers, while the rear has a pushrod setup. The car has carbon-ceramic brakes which are hidden behind the car’s 18-inch magnesium-alloy wheels, which are wrapped in 205/40 rubber in front and 265/35 in the back.
The cockpit carries forward the XL1’s beautiful simplicity while incorporating new elements like a lap timer.
A one-off design study, the XL Sport is the 200 millionth car produced by the VW Group, and a fitting way to mark that landmark.
