In Round 2 of the double header at the Port of Los Angeles Rhys Millen showed the same speed that took him to a victory in Daytona, holding off Block and Wiman for his second win in three events as Subaru Rally Team USA teammates Isachsen and Bucky Lasek completed the top five.
The course layout in San Pedro was short and tight — very tight. With lap times hovering around the 37-second mark, there was little time to recover from a mistake if a driver got a poor start. When charging through the field, there were few places to make a pass, so the options were either to use the joker lane, or bump and grind your way to the front.
“To sum it up, it’s been testing,” Millen said of his recent success. “We’ve had time to go to the events, not only to compete, but to go a week early and actually develop the car. We found the right combination in Charlotte, got it right in Daytona, and followed it up this weekend. So really it’s just hard work and sweat that’s got the car running fast.”
Ken Block’s third and second place finishes were his fourth and fifth consecutive podium placements, the longest active streak in Supercar and the longest of the season as well. Block took the points lead in Los Angeles for the first time in his Red Bull GRC career.
“The season did start off a bit rough,” said Block “and it took a bit to recover from that. From there, we just kind of put our head down and put as much work in as we could. It’s been a bit of luck, and coming from behind with hard work, that has gotten me five podiums in a row.”
Joni Wiman earned the second and third podium finishes of his Supercar career over the weekend. “It’s so great to be here. To be honest, I didn’t expect to do this well my first year, but of course I’m happy. It’s everything for me to get a good start on the weekend, feel it out fast, and get happy with the car, and then it’s just rolling on.” Said Wiman.
In regards to the Manufactures Championship, Ford clinched its fourth consecutive Red Bull GRC Supercar Championship.
