Renault is restating its passion for motor sports with the Renaultsport R.S. 01, a racing car of spectacular styling and exceptional performance. The Renaultsport R.S. 01 is a radical expression of the brand’s sporting DNA. With a carbon monocoque and an engine developing over 500 hp, it is able to reach a top speed of over 180 mph.
The Renaultsport R.S. 01 will take part in the one make World Series by Renault’s Renaultsport Trophy class. Renault and Nissan view this as a stepping stone to other efforts in a variety of series: GT, DTM, ELMS, WEV, and Super GT. In fact, winners in this particular Renaultsport Trophy class will have a shot at testing with the NISMO Super GT outfit, and the winner of the amateur class will get a once in a lifetime chance to race an LMP2 car at Le Mans in 2016.
The car is based around a Dallara carbon-fiber monocoque featuring an integral roll cage and fuel cell. The composite bodywork wraps over a NISMO-supplied 3.8 liter twin-turbo V6 (from the Nissan GT-R), paired to a Sadev sequential 7-speed transaxle gearbox. The pushrod suspension uses Öhlins adjustable dampers and it rides on unique, 18-inch Michelin tires, while PFC Brakes delivered six-piston calipers and 15-inch rotors. The whole thing weighs around 2400 lbs so it should certainly be quick.
Expect details of the race series to be released shortly to see the Renaultsport R.S. 01 on the track in 2015.
