A preview from the epicenter of the automotive world’s biggest weekend, the Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which encompasses dozens of car auctions, a multitude of car shows, many exclusive parties, and two very special events; the ROLEX Monterey Motorsports Reunion and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
Originally these two events were separate. One being a track rental for vintage car racing and the other being the most exclusive car concours show in the world. However, the growing popularity in both events gave way to synergy between the two which created, “Monterey Car Week.”
I spent the weekend before the main events mulling around the paddock at Laguna Seca, where many of the Motorsports Reunion have already set up camp and are racing in the Pre-Reunion. This year the ROLEX Monterey Motorsports Reunion honors Maserati’s centennial. As expected, there are many rare Maserati’s abound this year and even more to come.
One example came from noted Italian car collector Lawrence Auriana who sent not only key race and passenger cars to Monterey, but also a vintage 1952 Fiat 642 Maserati race car transporter.
The factory transporter, which was used during the pinnacle of Maserati’s racing efforts in the 1950s, serves as a dramatic addition to the Maserati heritage display in the race paddock.
The big transporter was used by Maserati to bring its sports cars and Formula 1 cars to tracks throughout Europe. Radiating historical significance, it was part of Juan Manuel Fangio’s 1953 and 1957 World Championship Formula 1 seasons with a Maserati 250F. After the 1957 season, the factory sold this transporter to Lance Reventlow for his SCARAB race team. SCARAB was the first post-war American-built Formula 1 car and was used until 1962.
The transporter was left neglected until it sold at auction in 2002 to Lawrence Auriana. At that time, a full restoration was undertaken in Modena, Italy under the supervision of Adolfo Orsi, historian and grandson of Adolfo Orsi, owner of Maserati from 1937 to 1968.
Another example of arguably the most famous and sought-after classic racecar ever – the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO – was previewed by Bonhams at the Monterey Pre-Reunion. The classic racecar, of which only 39 were constructed was on display prior to it going up for auction. The Ferrari, chassis number 3851GT, is from the Maranello Rosso Collection and has been in one family’s care for the past 49 years. Bonhams will sell the car and nine other Ferraris from the collection at its Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction on August 14th.
