Jay Leno, the world’s most famous McLaren owner decided to demonstrate the capabilities of his very own McLaren P1. Leno’s yellow P1 was the first delivered in the U.S. and he received the car in late March. Before taking the car out, Jay has a chance to talk with McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt, who partially credits Jay’s earlier drive of the P1 for helping the car sell out.
“We wanted to build the best driver`s car on a road track. And we used technology to achieve that,” Flewitt explained.
The P1 features a hybrid system consisting of a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, electric motor, and lithium-ion battery pack. It’s combined output is 903 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to get the hyper car from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.0 seconds, to 124 mph in 7.0 seconds, and to 186 mph in 17 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 217.5 mph, and the P1 lapped the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, although as much as he tried even Jay Leno couldn’t get the McLaren CEO to reveal the exact time.
According to Jay the P1 is much easier to drive on the streets than other exotics, and is just as enjoyable at non-racetrack speeds. The greatest proof of the P1’s versatility can be found on its odometer. Jay has put over 1,000 miles on the P1 since taking delivery, which is an impressive amount for such a rarefied machine.
“We designed this car for drivers that enjoy running it on the streets. It`s not like a work of art to be kept in the garage,” Flewitt backed him up.
