Superbike rookie Cameron Beaubier took a dominant victory in the RaceFuelZ Pro Superbike race at the Arai Pacific Nationals, Round Two of the GEICO Motorcycle Superbike Shootout Presented by Yamaha series, at Sonoma Raceway. The event marked the return of professional motorcycle racing to the 12-turn circuit, as a full field of Pro Superbike and Pro Sportbike professional riders joined the American Federation of Motorcycles (AFM) weekend for the Arai Pacific Nationals, Round Two of the GEICO Motorcycle Superbike Shootout Presented by Yamaha Series.
Beaubier was the pole-sitter, however by the end of the first lap he was down in fifth place, but the 21-year-old from Roseville, California, charged forward, took the lead from his teammate Josh Hayes on lap eight and pulled away to win the 20-lap race by 9.8 seconds.
Hayes led early, relinquishing the lead to his younger teammate on lap eight after he got out of shape in turn one and went into the dirt a bit. Once Beaubier got into the lead, he put his head down and kept pulling away from his teammate. After lap 9 Hayes, a three-time Pro Superbike Champion, had nothing on his rookie teammate and had to settle for the runner-up position on his YZF-R1.
Yoshimura Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas overtook privateer David Anthony early on, but from there the Colombian rode a lonely race to third on his GSX-R1000.
“From a racer’s perspective, I’m excited that someone has put in the effort to give us racers the opportunity to spend more time racing our awesome Superbikes. A big thank you for that,” said Hayes. “We’ve always had good crowds at Sonoma Raceway. It’s one of the best tracks we go to in the country and one that’s always brought me a lot of success.”
