McLaren is set to create a more-hardcore, track-only version of its P1 hypercar, company insiders have confirmed to English journalists.
With news that Ferrari is preparing a racing version of its LaFerrari which is potentially going to be powered by an F1-inspired V6 turbo however now McLaren looks set to flex its muscle with a track focused vehicle.
Similar to the upcoming LaFerrari XX, the P1 Track would be set up specifically for the circuit. According to McLaren, “the P1 ‘Track’ will have (even) more power and (even) torque than the road legal P1. It will also have (even) more extreme, aero tuned styling and an (even) more minimalist interior.
“We’ve written to all 375 P1 owners […] to express their interest in a track-only P1, after some asked us for one,” said our McLaren source. “It will be produced in low double-digits […] only when the run of 375 road cars is complete.”
All of which sounds very promising, the starting point is a hypercar with 903 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque on tap. However that is not all: “McLaren will organise a series of track events dedicated to the P1 ‘Track’ and its owners. There will be one-to-one driver training for this very exclusive group, too.” In other words, a similar approach to what Ferrari takes with its top clients.
