Mattias Ekström doesn’t need to prove anything. He’s won the DTM title twice and before that the Swedish Touring Car Championship. But being a racing driver as he is, Ekström has been looking for new challenges. He’s contested the Swedish Rally six times, the German Rally twice, he’s driven in the V8 Supercars and in NASCAR and he has won the Race of Champions, twice. However this season it’s a new challenge: the inaugural FIA World Rallycross Championship.
“This year our plans are to complete as much research and development of the car as we can for the future,” said Ekstrom. “Our goal is to build the best car. I grew up the in rallycross paddock because of my father, and I’m very excited about driving a Supercar this year, and to witness the sport growing into a world championship.”
Built to compete in the top category of the championship, the EKS Audi S1 Supercar will pack a 2.0-liter turbo with 600+ horsepower, all-wheel drive and a 0-60 time of around 1.9 seconds. It’s expected to make its debut late in May at the World RX of Great Britain.
Pontus Tidemand will contest World RX events alongside his program in the WRC2 category of the WRC in an M-Sport Ford Fiesta R5.
“It feels really good to be with EKS, a team with real ambition to win,” said Tidemand. “There is a lot of experience in the team and it’s made up by members who love to compete. I can’t wait for the year ahead.”
