The new Ferrari California T convertible marks the return of the Italian supercar manufacturer using turbocharged engines. Ferrari promises zero turbo lag from its innovative new low-mounted direct-injection 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The engine is rated at 552 horsepower and 557 pound-feet of torque. That is 70 more horsepower than the previous model, which, coupled with its almost 50% increase in torque, allows the new California T to accelerate from 0-62 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 196mph.
The new California T features an upgraded crankshaft and exhaust manifold, which Ferrari says allows the car to sound “even more potent” than before. However, there is plenty more to interest future buyers besides the new turbocharged engine, such as the retractable hardtop that turns the four-seater into a convertible in 14 seconds. Ferrari says the shape of the new car’s flanks is inspired by the 250 Testa Rossa of the 1950s.
Ferrari promises “the most exhilarating soundtrack any turbo has ever yielded.” Ferrari’s last turbocharged road car was the F40 which entered production in 1987. Other mainstream Ferraris with turbocharged engines include the 208 GTB, 288 GTO and the GTS Turbo, a variant of the 328. The new car will make its world debut at the Geneva motor show next month.
