Volkswagen made it official that it will be the latest company to enter Global Rallycross. Unfortunately the VW Beetle Global RallyCross car you see isn’t a real VW Beetle RallyCross car. The reason why is that the Global RallyCross cars don’t exist yet. The Rockstar-liveried Beetle on display is actually the 2012 Super Beetle SEMA concept, built by APR in conjunction with the guys from VWVortex. The Volkswagen Andretti RallyCross cars are currently being assembled at Volkswagen’s Motorsport HQ in Hannover.
With the cars still in the workshop it means Volkswagen Andretti RallyCross teammates Tanner Foust and Scott Speed will start the season in Polo GRC cars.
“We are excited about our driver lineup of Tanner [Foust] and Scott [Speed]; I believe we have the best drivers in the series and will be a top contender,” said Michael Andretti, CEO of Andretti Autosport
“Red Bull Global Rallycross is the perfect form of motorsports for a youthful, exuberant, and growing brand in the U.S. market,” said Michael Horn, president and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. “We’re excited to partner with Andretti Autosport, one of the great names in American motorsports, and delighted that we will be running the iconic Beetle in the series.”
Expect the all-wheel-drive Global RallyCross Beetle to pack “more than 560 horsepower” from its turbocharged TSI engine. The Beetle will officially make its rally debut at the Summer X Games in Austin, TX.
