Honda have taken the wraps off the S660 Concept (Kei car) at the recent Tokyo Motor Show. The S660 concept is possibly the spiritual successor to the 1990’s Honda Beat and harkens back to the original Honda S600 roadster of the mid 1960’s. However as the S660 is designed to fit within the strict Japanese domestic size limits, this means that unfortunately for the rest of the world, the S660 is not intended for sale outside Japan. Kei cars are exempt from crash test procedures which would prohibit their sale in Europe and the US.
Honda tells us only that the S660 roadster features “advanced styling” and “new initiatives such as Super cockpit interior”. Honda President and CEO, Takanobu Ito, also touched on the S660 in his remarks at the press conference, saying that the model “embodies the freewheeling thinking of young Honda engineers, who want to make a cool car that is unique to Honda.” Takanobu also said that the concept will be developed into a production model for 2015, which is great news for Japanese drivers.
The Honda S660 will be powered by a mid-mounted 660cc three cylinder turbo engine allied to a seven speed paddle shift transmission. Rumors also persist that the S660 concept is also capable of accepting Honda’s newly announced three cylinder 1-litre turbo engine. This could see power in the range of around 105bhp for the little roadster.
