One of the biggest highlights for many at Monterey Car Week is actually getting to see some of the Concours vehicles out on the road and taking part in the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance.
Scheduled on the Thursday before the Concours, the Tour sees the cars of the show on parade, retracing portions of 17 Mile Drive, winding through scenic forest roads above Monterey and through some of the most breathtaking driving roads in the state. This year for the first time competitors also completed a lap of Laguna Seca raceway. The tour takes a brief lunch break stopping in Carmel-by-the-Sea, where they spend time displayed on Ocean Avenue, before returning to Pebble Beach for a champagne toast.
The Tour which began in 1998 saw over 150 historic automobiles take off from Pebble Beach to complete the 88 mile loop. It is important to note that the Tour and the Concours are directly linked. If two vehicles tie in class competition at the Concours, the vehicle that successfully completed the Tour gets the nod.
The Tour d’Elegance remains the very best way for the general public to see some of the finest vehicles ever made, in their natural environment on the road.
