Pikes Peak 2013

There was quite a lot of hype surrounding Sébastien Loeb when it was announced that the nine-time World Rally Champion would partake in the 2013 edition of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. That hype was justified when the Frenchman smashed the existing overall record on Sunday by a more than a minute and a half, reaching the summit in just under eight minutes, fourteen seconds. Sébastien Loeb’s time of 8:13.878 takes almost 1:33 off the record set last year by Rhys Millen.

With all eyes turned toward Loeb, the weekend’s second-place driver, Rhys Millen, in his Hyundai PM580T finished in 9:02.192 his run some 49 seconds slower than Loeb. That may not sound impressive, but it, too, bested the previous record, set by Millen himself just last year.

As for Loeb’s time, Millen said he thought it would stand for a while. “I just spoke to [Loeb] and he said the run was perfect, the car was perfect and he didn’t know if he could push any harder.”

Take a moment to think just how impressive any run up Pikes Peak really is. The track measures 12.42 miles (19.99 km) with over 156 turns, climbing over 4,720 ft from the start at Mile 7 on Pikes Peak Highway, to the finish at 14,110 ft (4,300 m), on grades averaging 7%. Remember when sub-10-minutes was unthinkable? It wasn’t that long ago that “Monster” Tajima was the first to break into single-digit minutes, in 2011.

Results for the top three finishers in each class are as follows:
