Formula Drift is making its debut this weekend on a whole new continent in Australia at Calder Park this will be the first of 3 legs of the Achilles Asian Drift Series 2013 and as you will see by the course layout for the weekend. Calder Park’s ‘Thunderdome’ has been transformed for the drift championship and it looks like it is going to deliver. The weekend is in collaboration with ADGP giving fans two days of drifting with two different events.
Fans can look forward to catching high adrenalin drifting action when 32 of Australia’s best drifters battle it out in the Australian Drifting GP on Day 1, with the top 4 drivers earning a wildcard entry to compete in Achilles Formula Drift Australia 2013 on Day 2.
With a whole host of Formula Drift staples on display and with Fredric Aasbo debuting the NASCAR V8 Scion FR-S sponsored by RS-R it is going to make for an interesting weekend as Daigo Saito attempts to defend his title as well as crowd favorites Robbie Nishida and Mad Mike it is certainly going to be an entertaining weekend.
One other person we can’t leave out is Nigel Petrie who will be one of the weekends judges but aside from his judging skills he is also well known not only for his drifting skills, but his car building skills as well. His website, Engineered to Slide, showcases the modifications of the cars in his garage, which include his competition car a Nissan 180SX, his Nissan S13 ‘street car’ and his crazy, custom designed, made from scratch, tube frame Hilux drift ute. His experience as a driver, having competed at the Thunderdome twice before, will make his judging decisions highly respected.
Formula Drift Asia was created in 2008 with the inaugural FD Singapore competition. The first real international competition of its in Asia was held at the Changi Air Show Grounds. Since then, Formula Drift Asia has become its own championship series and it is now the first Pan-Asian professional drifting championship. In 2009 and 2010, the Championship made stops in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.
For the 2011/2012 Championship tour, FD Asia added an additional stop in Indonesia and now in 2013 we see it expand to include the event at Calder Park.
