The Concept Lawn at Pebble Beach offers something a little different to what in on display on the fairways. You are able to come across a series of concept and supercars. This year was no differenct featuring many cars that were only introduced in Monterey this past weekend, including the Infiniti Etherea, the Jaguar C-X75, the Zagato Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale and the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4. My favorite of the group, was the modern-meets-vintage Mercedes-Benz F-Cell Roadster, which was a sheer joy to behold.

The Etherea concept re-imagines the compact luxury car for a discerning new generation
of younger buyers. Designed in Japan under the direction of Shiro Nakamura, The Etherea is more coupe than hatchback in inspiration, with many Infiniti design signatures first seen on the Infiniti Essence concept supercar. Its dynamic character and highly sculptural form are unlike anything currently in its class. The B-pillar-less design and opposing doors provide a feeling of interior openness, with elegantly slender consoles between the four seats housing ancillary controls. Etherea’s craftsmanship is inspired by Japanese culture and reinterpreted through leading-edge technologies.

Being an Infiniti, there is a large helping of sports car in Etherea’s engineering. The concept car has been designed for a potent yet highly efficient hybrid drivetrain based around
the innovative one electric motor/twin clutch system now available in the 2012 Infiniti M Hybrid. Its supercharged 245-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine provides
quick response and strong acceleration, while the electric motor provides silent, emissionfree driving at low speeds.

The Jaguar C-X75 is designed to provide a glimpse into the future of Jaguar and its commitment to producing beautiful, fast cars powered by sustainable means. Advanced design features such as a groundbreaking propulsion system and active aerodynamics allow for an elegantly simple fuselage that remains stable at very high speeds. In May Jaguar announced its plan to build, in partnership with Williams F1, the C-X75 concept as an exclusive hybrid supercar. It will offer performance on par wih the fastest production cars, while adopting cutting edge technology that offers remarkably economical running.

The 205 mph, four-wheel-drive supercar is capable of running in purely electric mode for 68 miles on a six-hour charge. Innovative, lightweight micro gas-turbines can quickly recharge the lithium-ion batteries, giving the car a theoretical range of 560 miles. The energy created by the turbines and stored in the batteries is transmitted to the road using four independent torque-vectoring electric motors, each of which weighs just 50 kg but produces 195 bhp (145 kW) of power and an astonishing 1,180 lb.-ft. of torque. The C-X75 features an extruded and bonded aerospace-inspired aluminum body and chassis that not only saves weight but is easily recycled, boosting the car’s sustainability as well as its speed. To increase the design’s aerodynamic efficiency, the front grille and brake cooling vents open only when necessary. At the rear corners of the car vertical control surfaces automatically engage at higher speeds to direct airflow aft of the rear wheels for increased stability and efficiency. The carbon fiber rear diffuser includes an active aerofoil, and vanes in the exhaust ports further increase the effectiveness of the rear venturi tunnel.

The delivery of the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale marks the grand finale of the TZ3 program managed by Zagato in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Alfa Romeo (1910–2010). The initiative began in 2009 with the manufacturing of a one-off TZ3 Corsa, and subsequently led to the production of nine TZ3 Stradales. While the Corsa was designed to be pure race car, the TZ3 Stradale was created to be an avant-garde street-legal version. The first TZ3 Stradale has been delivered to American collector and Saratoga Automobile Museum board member Eric King; the second and third TZ3 Stradales are set to be sent to Japan and Europe. Clearly, the first “American Alfa Romeo” makes for a rare combination of American muscle and European finesse that can be appreciated by top collectors throughout the world.

Lamborghini once again redefines the super sports car market with the introduction of the all-new Aventador LP 700-4. As the sixth generation of the brand’s storied V12 flagship line dating back to 1963, the Aventador builds on an unrivaled history while taking a revolutionary step into the future. An innovative concept, a new technology package and phenomenal performance are the foundations of the newest Lamborghini. Featuring a stunning design inspired by precise aerodynamics, the Aventador is unmistakably a Lamborghini. With an aim toward optimizing power-to-weight ratio, the Aventador pairs an extremely stiff carbon fiber monocoque chassis with a 700 hp, 6.5-liter V12 engine. Resulting acceleration, handling and braking are ferocious. A zero-to-62 mph sprint is over in 2.9 seconds on the way to a top speed of 217 mph. The fully carbon fiber monocoque—a first for a production car—is produced entirely in-house using technology developed by the Italian manufacturer. The resulting structure is not only stiff but light; the complete body weighs just 506 pounds. And the vehicle’s total dry weight is only 3,472 pounds, offering a weight-to-power ratio of 4.96 lb/hp. True to tradition, the new flagship bears the name of a bull—a courageous black bull from the world of the Spanish Corrida. Lamborghini selected the Aventador to symbolize the brand’s courageous leap into the next generation of super sports cars.

The F-CELL Roadster, draws its inspiration from a diverse variety of automotive eras. From a functional standpoint, it’s a roadster fitted with a 1.2 kW hybrid drive – one that allows the F-CELL to reach a top speed of 15 mph and achieve an operating range of 217 miles. From a design standpoint, however, is where the F-CELL Roadster truly shines, as it manages to blend the overall aura of the originalBenz patent motor car with seating and a fiberglass front section both drawn from elements of Formula One racing.

As for who was responsible for creating the unique F-CELL Roadster, that honor goes to the trainees of of Daimler AG at the Sindelfingen plant, with more than 150 trainees and dual education system students working for about a year on the overall concept, development, assembly, and completion of the hybrid model. According to Human Resources Board member and Labor Relations Manager Günther Fleig: “This project impressively demonstrates that the topic of sustainable mobility has become an integral part of our vocational training. I am delighted to see how much initiative and creativity the young people have put into this project.”
